一转眼五年过去。想念你,Helen。

Helen Fay Lew was born in Seattle, WA in July of 1926 to Git-Tow Lew and June Eng Lew, who immigrated to the Pacific Northwest from Canton (now Guangzhou), China. In the years following World War II, while Helen was studying Far Eastern Studies and Political Science at the University of Washington, she served as the secretary to the chief Chinese delegate to the United Nations. As delegate, she visited the China Institute in New York City. It was here that Helen’s passion for sharing and celebrating Chinese culture grew and where she met her husband, Calvin Lang.
In 1959, with their four children, Helen and Calvin moved to Louisville where Calvin accepted a position at the University of Louisville’s Medical School. After raising her children, Helen founded the Crane House, The China Institute, Inc., now Asia Institute – Crane House (AICH) in 1987. AICH celebrates and brings to life the cultural diversity of Asia to Kentucky and southern Indiana residents and visitors. They are also the Filson’s neighbors in Old Louisville!
Helen described her ultimate goal for the Institute, “I think we all, as people, need to know each other better. We’re in a global economy and I am a strong believer in world peace. Without understanding, we will never have world peace.”Helen passed away in 2017, and the Filson is proud to preserve her legacy through her family’s materials.
